The Drink Smart Cup™ staff wants you to be smart about alcohol!
The BAL (Blood Alcohol Level) or BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration or Content) is the measure of how much alcohol
there is in a person’s blood. The BAL is commonly used to determine whether or not someone is legally intoxicated
(or “drunk”). The legal BAL value for intoxication is usually 0.08 in the U.S. but impaired function and slowed reactions
can occur at a BAL of 0.05 or less.
The BAL is related to the amount of alcohol a person has drunk in a given period of time. It is affected by factors such as a person’s sex, body weight, total body fat, total body water, liver function, use of drugs or medicines, and age. One standard drink, containing one half-ounce or 14 grams of alcohol, will increase the average person’s BAL by 0.02-0.05% with the BAL returning to 0.00% in about 1.5-3 hours later if the person burns off the alcohol at about .015% per hour.
The math is a little clumsy—see Widmark’s Equation, so just use the Drink Smart Cup™ BAL Calculator…
